Ideas on how to let more of your creativity out.

  • Thanks for your tips. I started rereading Freeman Patterson’s book to do some “what if” shots and it helps to just play and not judge. What used to be some “play time” with the camera has turned into time spent learning new software/upgrades, processing, producing, Facebooking, etc. At least I still get ideas while in the shower and driving!

  • Great ideas. I know from experience at doing 100’s of weddings you can really get bogged down in “THE LIST” of so called standard shots that brides and families expect. These are great ways to expand that. I would caution thought that there have been times when I’ve got caught up in my creative side to the extent that I forgot some of the “Standard” shots that the Bride or her mother expected to see.

  • The audio was a bit echoed, but the idea was great! It was the first one I wanted to watch and had great content. Have you ever thought of doing some contests based on creative ideas…it would keep people coming back and spur on some creative seminars (?)

  • I would just be echoing what others have already said.

  • I also liked the content but the sound was poor. I think Maury had a good idea for the lapel microphone.

  • Hi Rod,

Guess I’m not the only one who doesn’t like your audio. That said, let me give you a good point you could be using.

Creativity is the putting to use what you’ve already experienced. Implementation of good ideas is based on experiences in other situations – similar or not. Creativity comes from a kind of trained reflex or reaction to the new situation, using all those past and not necessarily remembered experiences, such as failures.

  • Jim..Great advice..
I will fix the sound and reupload..sorry..

  • Yah,, fixing that..thanks…

  • Hey I love the idea..expand more for me!

  • I know I am sorry.. I will fix the audio and reupload..our professional tutorials have pro mics etc..

  • Peggy, too funny..and awesome!

  • Thanks, Rod. Great tips – and a good reminder to step out of the whirlwind once in a while. I love the “be an artist” idea. I’m going to try that one.

  • Some awesome tips but my creativity was sparked more by the duece Vulcans LOL
I have been noticing a lack of time photographing for myself since I actually started doing portraits for money and a real sense of loss because of that, I always feel like I am doing what someone else wants me to do and never for myself so I am going to make a Commitment to start doing some of those creative excercises… First being Learning to do the Vulcan Greeting ( I have never been able to do that) Im ashamed.

  • I totally agree with you that creativity is learned and one element leads into another… I always skim through magazines and even the internet before a shoot and to build my files of references before a shoot. Sometimes thoughts would simply pop into my mind during a shoot and if the moment is right and your subject is willing, go for it.

  • Great information. Never thaought baout doing self assignments. Thanks for the tips. Great site also. I’m excited that I found it.

  • Great as always Rod, thanks for sharing. My Dad was a pro photographer and is always telling me something along the same lines but with a twist– get out and shoot for yourself once a week. I try, but admit that I don’t always do that, except in the summer when I can go to the horse races and play… that’s what I do for me for fun! Looking forward to more videos :) Audio was fine for me, so you must have fixed it!
